Meaning

Hail mountain’s daughter, Daksha’s child, Shambhu’s beloved, mine of virtues.

Mother of Ganapati — Parvati, Amba, Shakti, Bhavani!

Brahma cannot fathom your mystery; the five-faced one ever meditates on you.

Six-faced Kartikeya cannot tell your glory; thousand-mouthed Shesha labours hard.

Even they find no end, O Mother, who arrays preservation and dissolution.

Lips red as coral; most lovely kohl-lined eyes.

Lovely brow smeared with saffron; kumkum and rice grains charmingly adorn.

Golden robes and bodice adorned; divine girdle waves at your waist.

Mandar garlands grace your neck, charming every beholding heart.

Bearing dawn-red endless beauty; lovely splendour of ornaments.

A throne studded with many gems, on which Hari and the four-faced one shine.

Worshipped by Indra’s household; deer, serpents, yakshas resound your fame.

Hail, dweller of Mount Kailash; hail, unfolding crores of radiance.

The three worlds entire are your family; in every atom shines your light.

Mahesha, your life-lord, ever guards the three worlds.

When you won him as husband, ancient merits dawned.

Whose mount is an old bull — who can sing his glory?

Shankar ever haunts cremation grounds, wearing dread serpents as jewels.

Halahala’s hue spread over his throat, earning the name Neelkantha.

For the gods’ rejoicing he did this — drank poison, giving them nectar.

You are that one’s beautiful wife, rending sins, working blessing.

Beholding your supreme beauty, the three worlds stand amazed.

Frightened Mother Ganga shrank, her waves modest.

She came to Shambhu like a co-wife, leaving Vishnu’s lotus feet, rushing forth.

Her lotus face wilted; seeing, Shiva swiftly bore her on his head.

Eternal bliss, boon-giver, ever unfailing giver of fearlessness to devotees.

Destroyer of all sins and three afflictions; Maheshwari, Himalaya’s daughter.

Kashi city ever pleases your heart; you made it a seat of perfection.

Goddess, daily giver of alms, ordainer of grace, joy and love.

Destroyer of foes, hail, hail, Amba; fulfilling the speech of those who cling to you.

Gauri, Uma, Shankari, Kali; Annapurna, nourisher of the world.

Goddess, queen of all people; Sati, supreme queen, her husband’s life-breath.

You performed stern penance when Narada instructed you.

No grain, no water, not even air for food — your body became mere bone.

Leaves and grass pleased you not as food — then you earned the name Uma.

Seeing your penance, seven sages came to shake you; unshaken, undefeated.

Then they cried hail, hail, hail, and the seven sages went home.

Then Brahma and Vishnu came, speaking words of granting boons.

Uma asked them for a husband’s boon, desiring the world’s triple treasure.

“So be it,” said the two and left; you gained your wish fulfilled.

Marrying Shiva, O lovely one, you came to be called Hara’s left half.

Whoever reads this Chalisa — the Lord grants them wealth, kin and joy.

Moon-crested fair brow, hail, hail, mine of joy; Parvati, for devotees’ sake, ever stay boon-giving.
