Hymn text
Meaning
First I bow my head at Sai’s feet; I’ll tell how Sai came to Shirdi.
None ever knew his mother or father; where Sai was born stayed a riddle.
Some call him Ramchandra of Ayodhya; some call Sai Baba Hanuman, Wind’s son.
Some call him auspicious Ganapati; some call him Gokul’s Mohan, Devaki’s son.
Many devotees worship him as Shankar; some revere him as Dattatreya’s avatar.
Call him what you will — Sai is the true Lord, merciful friend of the lowly, giver of life to many.
I’ll tell you an event of years ago: a wedding party came to Shirdi of a fortunate one.
With it came a most beautiful boy; he stayed on, hallowing Shirdi town.
Days he wandered begging door to door, showing marvels that turned immortal.
As his years grew, so grew his glory; house to house sang Sai Baba’s praise.
Then Sai’s name rang to earth’s ends; guarding the suffering remained Baba’s work.
Whoever came to Baba’s feet crying “I am poor” found mercy, and sorrow’s bonds opened.
Once someone begged alms — “Baba, grant me a child” — “So be it,” said Sai, blessing them.
Baba himself grieved seeing sufferers’ plight; Shri Sai’s heart was ocean-vast.
Came a Madrasi devotee, a great wealthy householder, rich in goods but childless.
He entreated Sainath — “Baba, have mercy; ferry my storm-tossed boat across.”
“Without a family-lamp, darkness fills my home; hence I come surrendering to you, Baba.”
“Without an heir, wealth’s glamour is waste; today as a beggar I come to your shelter.”
“Grant me a son; lifelong I’ll stay your debtor; I hope in none but you, I trust only you.”
Much he pleaded, head at Sai’s feet; then pleased, Baba blessed the devotee.
“‘Allah will do you good’ — a son shall be born in your home; his grace stays on you and the child.”
None has ever plumbed Sai’s grace; gifting the Madrasi a jewel-son, he blessed his world.
Whoever worships him body and soul is delivered; truth never burns, falsehood ever loses.
“I am ever his support, ever his servant; having found a Lord like Sai, what more could I hope?”
Mine too were days with no bread to eat, clothes gone, only a scant loincloth left.
Though a river ran before me, I stayed thirsty; misfortune rained wildfire upon me.
Beyond this earth I had no support; a beggar in the world, stumbling door to door.
Then I met a friend, Sai’s supreme devotee, free of snares yet worldly like me.
Together we resolved to see Baba, ready to behold mercy’s very form.
Reaching holy Shirdi, we saw the ecstatic form; blessed our birth beholding Sai’s face.
Since we saw him, all sorrow vanished like camphor; troubles ended, calamities ceased.
Honour and respect we begged from Baba, reflecting his aura to the world.
Baba honoured me, dignified my life; on that strength I’ll smile through life.
Sai’s play so touched my heart, I feel him filling every atom of the world.
Kashiram, Baba’s devotee, lived in Shirdi, telling the world “I am Sai’s, Sai is mine.”
He hawked cloth himself through villages and markets, heart-strings ringing with Sai’s music.
Still night, all asleep, moon and stars in night’s lap; hand couldn’t see hand for darkness.
He was returning selling cloth — alas, from Kashi market — by strange chance, all alone that day.
Cruel rogues blocked his road, shouting “Kill him, cut him, rob him!”
Robbed and beaten, the villains vanished; stunned by blows, he lost consciousness.
Long he lay there senseless; who knows when flickers of sense returned.
Unknowingly “Sai” slipped from his lips, its echo reaching Baba in Shirdi.
Baba’s mind grew agitated and restless, as if it all happened before his eyes.
Frenzied, Baba paced here and there, hurling whatever came before him.
He thrust his hand into blazing coals; all watched the wondrous tandava in alarm.
All understood: some devotee lay in peril; stunned, they stood amazed.
To save him Baba writhed today, aching with the devotee’s own pain.
Then the divine showed its marvel, making devotees’ faith-river surge.
A cart arrived bearing the senseless devotee; seeing him, Sai’s eyes filled.
Calm, patient, grave, ocean-like is Baba’s heart, yet today it kept turning restless.
Today mercy itself turned doctor, God himself the devotee’s guard.
Kashi passed the devotee’s harsh trial; townsfolk thronged to see him.
Whenever, wherever a devotee falls in peril, Baba arrives in a moment to guard.
Age-old truth, no new tale: when devotees face calamity, the Indweller comes himself.
Beyond priests’ bias was Sai, humanity’s own; Hindu-Muslim, Sikh-Christian all equally dear.
Baba smashed temple-mosque divides; Rahim, Krishna, Karim, Allah were all his.
Bell-echoes filled each mosque corner; Hindu-Muslim met, love doubling day by day.
How fair the miracle this body showed, filling even bitter neem with sweetness.
Sai loved all, cherished all equally, granting each whatever they sought.
Whoever ever chants his loving vessel’s name sees mountain-like sorrows vanish in a moment.
Never have we seen a giver like Sai, whose mere vision ends all calamity.
Chant Sai in body, Sai in mind; losing body-sense, remember him.
When you forget yourself, remembering Baba night and day, chanting Baba-Baba...
Helpless, Baba must heed you, fulfilling your every wish.
Wander not madly jungle to jungle seeking Baba; in Shirdi alone you’ll find him.
Blessed the soul who found Baba, singing Sai’s praise through joy and sorrow, all eight watches.
Though mountains of peril fall, though lightning strike — hold Sai’s name and stand firm before all.
Hear this elder’s marvels and you’ll marvel; many clever wise ones heard dumbstruck.
Once a fraud sadhu came to Shirdi, deluding the innocent townsfolk.
Showing herbs, he lectured, telling listeners his home was Vrindavan.
“I have one medicine of wondrous power; taking it frees you from sorrow.”
“To be freed of troubles and sickness is my humble plea to every man and woman.”
“Buy it — its method is unique; trifling thing, yet its virtues are immense.”
“If the childless here eat my medicine, they’ll gain jewel-sons, every wish fulfilled.”
“Whoever buys not my medicine will repent lifelong; such a soul may never come again.”
“The world is a two-day fair — enjoy its pleasures; if this gives you all, take it too.”
People’s amazement grew watching his tricks, while he inwardly rejoiced at their folly.
A servant ran to tell Baba the news; hearing, brows knitted, all forbearance forgotten.
“Order, servant — seize the scoundrel at once, or drive the cheat beyond Shirdi’s bounds!”
“While I live, what wretch dares cheat Shirdi’s innocent folk?”
“In a moment I’ll hurl such frauds, vile robbers, into destruction’s pit for life.”
The cruel, crooked cheat sensed a hint — death danced overhead; Sai was angered.
In a moment he stopped the show and fled headlong, thinking God would show no mercy now.
True — no giver like Sai exists in the world; Sai Baba, God’s own portion, finds nothing hard.
Wearing love, virtue, courtesy as jewels, whoever walks humanity’s service path...
Wins every heart in the world; even one frown of theirs distresses the world.
Whenever sin’s burden grows heavier in the world, an avatar comes to end it.
Wiping out all this world’s sin and injustice, chasing the demons away in a moment.
So avatar Sai came to mortal earth, teaching equality, effacing all selfhood.
In Shirdi, Sai named his mosque Dwarka; doubts, torments ended for all who came.
Ever rapt in Ram’s remembrance sat Sai, chanting Ram’s name all eight watches.
Dry or stale, fresh or feasts — all alike to Sai, hungry only for love’s bargain.
Whatever devotees lovingly offered, Baba sanctified that food with relish.
Sometimes to divert the mind Baba walked to the garden, rejoicing beholding nature.
Colourful garden blooms swaying softly filled even desolate hearts with love’s waters.
Even in such sweet hours, sufferers ringed Baba to voice their hearts’ grief.
Hearing their piteous tales, lotus eyes filled; giving vibhuti, he filled hearts with peace.
What wondrous power that ash held — worn on the brow, it ended all sorrow.
Blessed those who won Baba Sai’s living vision; blessed the lotus hands touching his feet.
Would that you too met living Sai — your long-ruined garden would bloom again.
Had I grasped Shri’s feet, I’d never let go lifelong; had Sai frowned at me, I’d surely win him back.
