Meaning

Bowing my head to Baglamukhi, I write the Chalisa today.

Show me eternal grace; may my task be fulfilled.

Hail, hail, hail, Shri Bagala Mata; primal power, saviour of the whole world.

Your face, Mother, is like the bagala bird; hence arose your famed name.

Moon-browed, strikingly lovely earrings; gods and humans sing your praise.

Yellow robes grace your body; mace and club shine in your hands.

Three-eyed, champak garland round your neck; boundless radiance streams from your brow.

A jewel-studded throne shines; beholding its splendour, all are charmed.

Yellow-hued seated queen, boon-giver to devotees.

Yellow jewels, yellow sandal; gods, men, serpents all salute you.

Hold this meditation in heart — so say Vedas, Puranas, saints.

Now I reveal worship’s method, whose doing ends sorrow.

First wave a yellow flag, clothing the goddess in yellow.

Kumkum, rice, sweets, gram-flour, colours, areca, sandal.

Garlands, turmeric, fruit, betel — offer all, holding her in heart.

Incense, lamp, camphor wicks — then wave the lamp with love.

Praising with folded hands: fulfil, Mother, my desires.

Mother, devotion to you is every joy’s mine; grace me, knowing me your own.

End three afflictions, every sorrow; dispelling darkness, grow wisdom.

Again and again I entreat you; grant me unbroken devotion and wisdom.

Ending worship with havan gains the heart-wished fruit.

Whoever offers mustard in fire subdues all moving and still.

Mixing sesame, rice, milk, worshipping with loving devotion.

Woe and want touch them never; surely all joy and wealth follow.

Whoever offers ashoka flowers fills their home with joy and wealth.

Offering semal fruit in fire surely wastes all foes away.

Whoever offers guggul and ghee brings kings under sway.

Offering guggul with sesame cuts every bond.

Whoever recites the seed-syllables, uttering your seed-mantra.

Whoever chants a month of nights ends every torment.

Wherever pure ground lies at home, there the seeker should chant.

They surely gain wished fruit; let none doubt this.

Or go to a riverbank, chanting with devoted mind.

Whoever chants ten thousand succeeds in every deed.

Whoever chants a lakh times spreads fair fame wide.

Whoever chants your name with heart destroys foes swiftly.

Whoever chants the name seven nights sees every work fulfilled.

Whoever chants nine days finds the body free of sickness.

The barren woman who meditates gains sons and the four rewards.

Morning, evening and noon, meditating brings welfare.

How far shall I tell your glory? Your name ever works bliss.

Whoever daily recites the Chalisa — Gaurisha graces them.

I am Santsharan’s son, Kulapati Mishra by fair name; dwelling in Haridwar district, Haripur village home. In nineteen ninety-five, in Shravana’s bright month, I composed this Chalisa, servant at your feet.
