Meaning

On lovely Mount Kailāsa the mountain-daughter Pārvatī questioned Śambhu — crowned with the crescent moon, master of the six sacred traditions —

O Lord of gods, supreme Ruler, master of the meaning of all scriptures! Kindly tell me now the means of destroying debt.

Well asked, gracious one, out of desire for the world's good; I shall declare it all — listen with full attention.

I bow to that god Gaṇeśa — vermilion-hued, two-armed, pot-bellied, seated on a lotus petal, attended by Brahmā and the gods, surrounded by siddhas.

Whom Brahmā duly worshipped at the dawn of creation for the success of his work — may that son of Pārvatī ever destroy my debt.

Whom Śambhu duly worshipped before slaying Tripura — may that son of Pārvatī ever destroy my debt.

Whom Viṣṇu worshipped for the slaying of Hiraṇyakaśipu and the rest — may that son of Pārvatī ever destroy my debt.

The Lord of the gaṇas whom the Goddess worshipped at the slaying of Mahiṣa — may that son of Pārvatī ever destroy my debt.

Whom Kumāra (Kārtikeya) worshipped before slaying Tāraka — may that son of Pārvatī ever destroy my debt.

Gaṇeśa whom the Sun worshipped for the restoration of his radiance — may that son of Pārvatī ever destroy my debt.

The Leader of the gaṇas whom the Moon worshipped for the increase of his lustre — may that son of Pārvatī ever destroy my debt.

Whom Viśvāmitra worshipped for the protection of his austerities — may that son of Pārvatī ever destroy my debt.

This debt-removing hymn destroys even severe poverty; whoever, with collected mind, recites it once daily for a year —

— leaves grim poverty behind and becomes the equal of Kubera. This great mantra ending in "phaṭ" has fifteen and a half syllables.

"Om Gaṇeśa, cut my debt, O most excellent one — huṃ namaḥ phaṭ" — this is the root mantra.

Its preliminary discipline (puraścaraṇa) is declared at ten thousand repetitions; with a thousand repetitions one swiftly gains the desired fruit.

By its mere remembrance, ghosts, spirits and piśācas are destroyed.
