Hymn text
Hail, hail, hail, queen of Vindhyachal; primal power, world-known Bhavani.
Lion-riding world-mother, hail; hail, hail, hail, giver of triple-world joy.
Hail distress-ending world-goddess; hail, hail, served by demons and gods.
Boundless, infinite is your glory; thousand-mouthed Shesha fails describing it.
Ending the lowly’s woes, Bhavani; none so generous as you was ever seen.
Fulfilling everyone’s desires, Mother, of boundless world-renowned glory.
Whoever meditates on you at once gains wished fruit.
You are Vaishnavi and Rudrani; you are Sharada and Brahmani.
Rama, Radhika, Shyama, Kali — you are the Mother nourishing saints.
Uma, Madhavi, Chandi, Jwala — swiftly be gracious to me.
You are Hinglaj queen; you are Shitala and the wise one.
Durga, fortress-destroying Mother; you are Lakshmi, world’s joy-giver.
You are Jahnavi and ...; Hemavati, desireless Amba.
Eight-armed Varahini goddess, served by Vishnu-Shiva devotees.
Sixty-four blissful goddesses; Gauri-Mangala, mine of all virtues.
Patan’s Mumba, tooth(?) maiden; Bhadrakali, hear my plea.
Thunderbolt-bearer, grief-ender; life-guarder, Vindhya-dweller.
Jaya and Vijaya, baitali spirits; fragrant and dread Mother.
Endless are your names, Bhavani; how shall ignorant humans tell them?
Upon whom your grace falls, Mother, they do whatever the heart desires.
Show mercy to me, great queen; fulfil, Amba, my words.
Whoever holds Mother’s meditation ever finds welfare.
Peril never visits even in dreams whoever has the goddess’s chant performed.
Whoever bears boundless debt should recite a hundred times.
Surely debts are freed for whoever recites with devoted mind.
Whoever reads and teaches this praise finds great joy in this world.
Whomever sickness torments, brother — chanting drives it all far.
Whoever lies deep in prison should recite a thousand times.
Surely they escape prison — take my words as truth, brother.
Upon whom whatever peril falls should surely remember the goddess.
Whoever has no son, brother, should try this remedy.
Recite for five years, feeding Brahmins in Navratri.
Surely Bhavani is pleased, granting a virtuous son.
Offer flag and coconut, worshipping duly.
Recite daily with devoted mind; with love, there is no other remedy.
This Shri Vindhyachal Chalisa makes paupers kings by reading.
Marvel not at this, brother; gracious glances fall upon them.
Hail, hail, hail, world-mother Bhavani; show mercy, knowing me your own.
