Tulsi Mata Chalisa

About

The complete traditional text of the widely recited Chalisa honouring Tulsi Mata, with an English meaning and Hindi explanation beneath each verse. It follows the widely printed reading; another “Manas Chalisa” to Tulsi also circulates. Minor spelling differences occur across editions.

Opening couplet

O blessed Tulsi queen, I entreat, bowing my head.

Whatever dire distress befalls me, end it, Mother.

Hymn text

Salutations, salutations, Tulsi queen, whose boundless glory none can tell.

Vishnu honoured you; your great fame spread through the world.

Hail Vishnu’s beloved, glorious Bhavani, mine of joy for all three worlds.

Whoever worships the Lord succeeds not without you.

In homes where you do not dwell, Vishnu does not reside.

Whoever ever remembers you sees every task fulfilled.

Kartik month holds your greatness; the whole world knows it.

Maidens who worship you win handsome gentle grooms.

Women who worship daily grow happy with joy and wealth.

Old women who worship gain devotion, hearts a-thrill.

Whoever worships with faith crosses the ocean of existence.

Bhagavata recitals and rites succeed not without you.

Your glory fills the heavy world; all who hold you in heart meditate on you.

You are Mother in yantras and tantras; all works succeed in a moment.

As medicine you are Mother; your fame is renowned through all worlds.

Gods, seers, sages, ascetics ever cry your victory.

Vedas-Puranas sang your fame, fathoming not your fathomless glory.

Salutations, hail, joy-maker; salutations, hail, sorrow-ender.

Salutations, giver of joy and wealth; salutations, axe to sins.

Salutations, ender of devotees’ woes; salutations, curber of villains’ pride.

Salutations, ferrier across existence; salutations, improver of the next world.

Salutations, saviour of your devotees; salutations, orderer of devotees’ affairs.

Salutations, hail, destroyer of folly; salutations, creator of joy.

Hail, hail, hail, Mother Tulsi; I meditate on you, bowing my head.

Knowing me your own, adopt me; mend my spoilt affairs.

I entreat you, Mother; fulfil my hopes.

Sheltering at your feet, palms joined, I persuade you, singing your virtues night and day.

Show this mercy on me now, Mother; may my whole body turn pure.

I ask, Mother, grant this boon; fulfil every desire.

I know no vows or rites; forgive, Mother, my offences.

Whoever worships all twelve months has no equal in the world.

First fetch Ganga water, then bathe her beautifully.

Offer sandal, rice, flowers, incense, lamp, food.

Sip Ganga water in sipping-rite; meditate with pure heart.

Then recite the Chalisa, praising Mother Tulsi.

Whoever worships thus ever finds no suffering in body.

Keeping Kartik month’s discipline, sleeping pure nightly, perfection follows.

This tale grants great joy; readers and hearers cross existence.

Tulsi Maiya, you are blissful; all the world knows your glory.

Whoever meditates on you daily with devotion, singing, pleases you.

Closing couplet

Whoever recites this Shri Tulsi Chalisa gains from Govinda whatever the heart desires.
