Hymn text

Hail Savita, hail, victory to Divakar! Thousand-rayed! Seven-horsed darkness-destroyer!

Bhanu! Patanga! Marichi! Bhaskar! Savita! Hansa! Sunoor! Vibhakar!

Vivasvan! Aditya! Vikartana! Martanda of Hari-form! Virochana!

Called Ambarmani! Khaga! Ravi! The Vedas sing you as Hiranyagarbha!

Crying Sahasranshu Pradyotana, sages rejoice in delight.

Lovely Aruna-like charioteer, driving seven steeds mounted on the chariot.

The orb’s glory is most wondrous; I offer myself to your radiant form.

Horses yoked like Ucchaishrava; seeing them, Indra is shamed.

Mitra, Marichi, Bhanu, Aruna, Bhaskara; Savita, Surya, Arka, Khaga, Kalikara.

Taking Pusha, Ravi, Aditya’s names, saying salutation to Hiranyagarbha.

Sing the twelve names with love, bowing the head twelve times.

Devotees gain the four rewards, destroying heaps of sorrow, poverty, sin.

This is salutation’s miracle, essence of Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva’s grace.

Whoever serves Bhanu with devoted mind gains eight siddhis, nine treasures.

Uttering the twelve names averts a thousand births’ sins.

Your devotees who sing your tales are freed from foes that very instant.

Wealth, sons and family grow; mighty delusion’s noose is cut.

Arka guards the head; Ravi ever sports upon the brow.

Surya ever reigns upon the eyes; Day-maker graces the ears’ region.

Bhanu ever dwells in the nose; Bhaskara ever benefits the mouth.

Parjanya stays on our lips; the keen beloved dwells amid the tongue.

Golden sands grace the throat; keen radiance charms the shoulders.

Pusha on the arms, Mitra on the back; Tvashta-Varuna abide giving fine warmth.

For guarding both hands; the radiant one upon the chest, fair-formed.

Lovely Aditya dwells in the navel; at the waist, mind filled with joy.

Gopati Savita dwells on the thighs; hidden Divakar gives delight.

Vivasvan guards the feet; the darkness-destroyer ever dwells around.

Thousand-rayed one maintains every limb — wondrous armour of protection, reflect!

Whoever thus contemplates in heart — cause them no fear in the world.

Ringworm, leprosy never afflict whoever chants this in heart.

Who dispels the world’s darkness, filling it with new light’s joy.

Whom seized planets cannot efface — crores of times I bow to him.

Whose Saturn-like son in the world is wondrous as Dharmaraja.

Blessed, blessed day-jewel god, whom gods, sages, men serve.

With devotion, full discipline, they move far from worldly delusion.

Most blessed is the human-bodied one on whom the darkness-destroyer is pleased.

Aruna in Magha, Surya in Phalguna; Madhu, Vedanga names of the rising sun.

Bhanu’s rise counts Vaishakha; Indra in Jyeshtha, Ravi sung in Ashadha.

Yama in Bhadon, Himareta in Ashwin; Divakar leads in Kartik.

...in Aghan, Vishnu in Pausha; Purusha-named Ravi in Malmasa.

Closing couplet

Whoever daily sings the Bhanu Chalisa with love gains diverse joys and wealth, ever fulfilled.
