Hymn text
Hail, hail, Pretraj, purifier of the world; terribly powerful, destroyer of the three afflictions.
Fearsome hero, ocean of compassion; remover of devotees' troubles, mine of every virtue.
A gem-studded throne shines; men and sages are captivated seeing and hearing you.
A glittering crown sits fair upon the head; the ear-rings greatly please the mind.
Bow, sword, arrows and spear; heroic attire and a terrific brow.
Mounted on an elephant with a mighty army; drums and mridanga beat in the procession.
Canopy, fan and whisk sway above the head; crowds of devotees cry out hail, hail.
Crest-jewel of devotees, fiercely valorous; arms that crush the wicked, adorned in strength.
As the army marches even the earth trembles; with darshan the filth of the kali age is erased.
Coming to the ghat at Mehandipur, Pretraj — ocean of virtues — manifested.
A red flag flutters in the sky; devotees dance, intoxicated at heart.
O Lord who fulfils devotees' desires, famous as the servant of Bajrangi.
You who fulfil every wish; who remove all sorrow and calamity.
Whoever comes with whatever desire — all obtain the fruit their heart longed for.
Those who come for the service of the sick go home swiftly restored.
Bhuta, pishacha, jinn and vetala flee at the sight of your terrible form.
All physical and bodily suffering you erase at once, as if in play.
However hard the task in the world, chanting your name brings it all to pass.
Those who serve with body, mind and wealth — the Lord removes all their troubles.
O compassionate Lord of mine, I lie fallen at your feet.
I have none but you, O Lord; you are my one and only refuge.
My honour is in your hands; I have fallen for the support of your feet.
One who pleads thus with body and mind is freed of disease and grief from the body.
You took incarnation at Mehandipur and removed the sorrows of devotees.
The sick, the mad, the childless — from whose children and wealth bhuta-illness has snatched away.
All who come to your door go home with the fruit their heart desired.
Your glory has spread across the earth; devotees have sung of your play.
The mahant Ganesh Puri, ascetic, worships you, offering body and mind.
Mace whirling in his hands, the sturdy messengers stand ready.
Red body smeared with sindoor; the spirit-world trembles thara-thara.
Whoever daily recites the Pretraj Chalisa — one or twenty-one times.
Bathe in the early morning, and apply oil and sindoor.
Apply sandal, attar and gulal, and garland him with flowers.
Wave camphor in arati and offer prayer, chanting 'hail'.
All their troubles are cut away; rejoicing, they go back to their homes.
He fulfils the wishes of his people; the heart's desire succeeds.
Devotees' trouble-remover, destroyer of the enemy clan; in whose meditation every sin is released.
Hail, hail, hail, king of the pretas, hail; hail to the lord of the earth, remover of calamity, hail.
The man who reads the Pretraj Chalisa never keeps even the slightest sorrow.
Says the devotee: keep your meditation on Pretraj's pure feet.
Closing couplet
Crusher of the wicked, remover of the world's sins, calmer of every pain of embodied life — hail the mighty protector of devotees, Pretraj, root of happiness.
