Exaltation, debilitation, and own-sign placement
Overview
Jyotish uses sign-based terms such as exaltation, debilitation, and own sign when describing a planet’s traditional dignity. They are interpretive concepts, not a standalone verdict about a chart or a person.
What the terms mean
A planet is in its own sign when it occupies a sign traditionally ruled by that planet. Exaltation and debilitation name two other traditional sign relationships: one is treated as especially supportive of a planet’s expression, while the other is treated as less supportive. The precise rules and their application belong to a particular Jyotish school.
One placement is not the whole chart
A careful reading considers the chart’s stated calculation method and more than sign dignity. Practitioners may also examine the house, house ruler, aspects, conjunctions, divisional charts, and timing systems. Schools can weigh these factors differently, so explain the method before drawing a conclusion.
Avoid good-or-bad labels
Traditional dignity language does not establish a guaranteed life event. A placement described as exalted is not a promise of success, and a debilitated placement is not proof of failure. Treat the reading as a cultural or reflective interpretation, not scientific prediction or professional advice.
Questions to ask about a reading
Ask which tradition and chart settings are being used, what other chart factors were considered, and how uncertain conclusions are communicated. Clear explanations let readers understand the reasoning without treating an interpretation as certainty.
